World War Two – Romany persecution. More than 1.5 million
died in the Holocaust, the only other population besides the Jews to be

1943-44 – A Porajmos, gypsy Roma were sent to Auschwtz by
early spring 1943. Rudolf Hoss, the Auschwtz commander, opened a gypsy camp
called Auschwtz II. By the time Hoss liquidated the gypsy Roma camp on 2 Aug
1944 about 21,000 out of 23,000 gypsy inmates had perished in Birkenams gas
chambers. By august 1944 there were 4,000 gypsies left, these were sent to the
